Stars make it a special Christmas for Shooting Star

Father Christmas hands out presents

Nigella Lawson, Philip Glenister, players from Harlequins, cartoon characters and Santa Claus himself were among surprise guests at Shooting Star's Christmas Parties.

The two parties were put on to give families supported by Shooting Star a memorable Christmas event and included children’s entertainers, a puppet show, carols, a disco, food including biscuits baked by Nigella Lawson, and a fabulous Santa’s Grotto.

Harlequins Rugby Club were among contestants in Shooting Star’s very own ‘S-Factor’ talent show. Ollie Kohn and Jordan Turner-Hall played judges Louis Walsh and Simon Cowell and watched on as Waisea Luveniyali performed the Haka and Seb Stegmann showed off some robotic dance moves.

Jordan Turner-Hall said the Harlequins players enjoyed their visit. ‘We love coming here because you see all the children smiling, which is especially nice at this time of year. I wasn’t sure about playing Simon Cowell at first because I don’t like to be the bad guy! But the kids certainly looked like they enjoyed it, which is great. Shooting Star House has a brilliant atmosphere and there are some wonderful people here.’

Philip Glenister was visiting Shooting Star House for the first time. ‘My first reaction is that it’s a place of warmth and joy. Seeing the different families’ children interact with each other is lovely to see. They find a common ground so naturally and we could all learn something from that. The party was a lot of fun, but after seeing the Harlequins players perform, I think I’m going to have to start working on an act for next year!’

The children were given a number of presents donated by local community groups and businesses, and they also received a highly-sought-after Aleksandr the Meerkat, kindly donated by Harrods.

‘We’re really grateful to all our guests and those who have donated presents to make the Christmas parties so special,’ said Nursery Nurse Leanne Telfer. ‘Everyone really got into the spirit of the occasion by joining in with all the activities. The children particularly enjoyed the robotic dancing and seeing the Harlequins team playing Louis Walsh and Simon Cowell!
