Facilities at Shooting Star House

Hydrotherapy Pool and SpaShooting Star House is a very special place -
a home from home for families who find themselves in truly unimaginable circumstances. The hospice was built in 2005 and is equipped with a range of excellent facilities.

  • Ten children's bedrooms: Each bedroom is decorated neutrally to allow them to be personalised to suit specific age and tastes of the child or young person staying. All bedrooms have sofa beds, allowing parents to sleep close to their child. Each bedroom is equipped with ceiling hoists and two bedrooms are en-suite.

  • Six family rooms: These first-floor rooms enable parents to stay on site when their child is at Shooting Star House. Two of the bedrooms are interconnecting to allow the whole family to stay.

  • The Cosmos Therapy Zone: A purpose-built therapies unit housing music, play and relaxation therapy rooms. Capital Radio's Help a London Child Christmas Appeal played a significant role in making The Cosmos Therapy Zone happen.

  • The Sensory Room: A magical room, this is suitable for children and young people of all ages. The aim of The Sensory Room is to provide an environment which gently stimulates the senses through touch, sight and sound. This is achieved by using fibre optics, mirrors, water tubes, lights and a musical floor.

  • Hydrotherapy Pool and Spa: The Hydrotherapy Pool and Spa is popular with the whole family. Hydrotherapy is important because it gives children and young people freedom of movement they would not otherwise experience, helps improve blood flow and circulation and can help to relieve physical pain. The pool can be easily accessed via a hoist and is kept at a warm temperature for a comfortable environment. It costs more than £15,000 a year to maintain The Hydrotherapy Room and Spa at Shooting Star House.

  • The Sparkle Play Room: Sparkle Day Care allows families a structured way of accessing Shooting Star’s service during the day (Mondays to Thursdays, 9.30 am to 4.30 pm) which enables parents and carers a break to do everyday tasks. Sparkle Day Care provides a holistic care package incorporating health, social and educational needs and is modelled on a child’s world.
The room is named in acknowledgement of a significant donation by the Sparkle (children's) Charity. For five consecutive years, money raised from The Sparkle Ball was donated exclusively to The Shooting Star Children's Hospice. In all, more than £500,000 has been raised, representing the highest donation Shooting Star has ever received from one source.

  • Arts and Crafts Room: From face painting to making costumes to creating thumb, hand and foot prints, the Arts and Crafts Room is always a lively place to be. Our children and young people will use paint, sand, clay, water and much more to create beautiful masterpieces or a glorious mess! The Arts and Crafts Room is an example of the detail which went into the build of Shooting Star House - the walls boast magnetic paint, making it easy to display the children's artwork. We will spend more than £300 a month providing paint and equipment for The Arts and Craft Room.

  • An outdoor play area: Swings, go-karts and other equipment to help children and young people have fun. The equipment is suitable for wheelchairs users e.g. the children's roundabout is at floor level.

  • The Tranquil Suite and Peaceful Garden: A private area of Shooting Star House allowing bereaved families to grieve in their own way.

  • The Maple Room: A family lounge to let families relax and spend time together.
