About the role

Shooting Star Children’s Hospices is a leading children’s hospice charity caring for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families. We support families across Surrey and London from diagnosis to end of life and throughout bereavement with a range of nursing, practical, emotional and medical care.

The post is an NHS funded post within the Specialist Paediatric Palliative Care (SPACE) service but working under a Shooting Star Children’s Hospice contract and terms and conditions.

We are expanding our well established team and have exciting opportunities for you to join us in meeting the needs of children, young people and families. A role in specialist paediatric palliative care is  incredibly rewarding and you are able to make a real difference to the lives of children living with life limiting conditions. The role will offer development of advanced nursing skills both within a team and as an autonomous practitioner. You will have the opportunity to attend bespoke training  offered by the education team as well as external training events. The team work with the local Intensive Care Units and you will have the opportunity to work closely with these teams to develop knowledge and skills.

We require an experienced paediatric nurse with additional qualifications or experience in caring for children with Palliative Care needs in a Community, hospital or hospice setting, able to use their skills, knowledge and expertise in a variety of situations, autonomously and as a member of the team.

The post holder will provide holistic care and support to children and young people (CYP) with life limiting conditions and their families as a key member of the SPACE service. This care is provided in the community and at the hospice and the post holder will be required to work in all settings, but will primarily be based at Christopher’s hospice.

As a Clinical Nurse Specialist you will work closely with the Consultant in Paediatric Palliative medicine at Shooting Star Children’s Hospices, contracted GPs for the hospice, Great Ormond Street Palliative Care Team, Evelina Palliative Care Team and the Royal Marsden Hospital Paediatric Oncology Outreach Team. The post holder will potentially work towards being an active participant in the Paediatric Patient Advice by Telephone for Care at Home, Hospice and Hospital (PATCH) out of Hours on call service hosted by the Royal Marsden Hospital or will form part of the Shooting Star Children’s Hospices Community team on call as required

Excellent communication skills as well as up to date clinical skills are essential.

Shooting Star Children’s Hospices children’s hospice care is provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The post holder will be required to work flexibly across the 24 hours, to meet the needs of planned and emergency care. Ability to travel to a variety of locations and work flexible hours is essential.
