SUMMARY:Thames Sailability Sensory boat trip - Accessible
DESCRIPTION:Thames Sailability’s specially adapted motorboat\, “Impossible Dream”\, allows its passengers to enjoy boating on the Thames. They have a boarding ramp for access by users of wheelchairs\, powered chairs\, and people with reduced mobility\, and a safe covered cabin area….with central heating! \nImpossible Dream sails all year round and has a skilled and trained crew to help us. \nWe are offering this to children and young people who would benefit from this as a sensory experience. \nThe sound of the water lapping the front of the boat\, the wildlife that we pass\, and maybe even the rain on the roof of the Impossible Dream’s awning. \nSpace is limited so we are offering space for 3 wheelchair users and a parent or carer each. There is an opportunity to transfer onto a bench or chair if that is appropriate but rest assured chairs can board the board and stay on for the duration of the trip. \nWhilst on the boat\, we ask that the young person and carer remain seated at all times\, for safety reasons this is very important. We will review all the RSVPs and ensure that our care team is in agreement that this event is safe for you to attend. \nWe can’t wait to see you there. If you are not sure if this event is for you\, please don’t hesitate to contact me: caroline.brett-field@shootingstar.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Teen siblings half term climbing event
DESCRIPTION:Has your teen been “climbing the walls” this half term? Well\, why not encourage them to spend the morning with other teen siblings of Shooting Star Children’s Hospices. \nWe will start the day with a 90-minute session with a fully trained instructor and of course\, all safety equipment provided. Working to their own ability with a relaxed session at Blue Spider\, Guildford. \nMeet us there with a packed lunch and some money if they want to purchase anything from the cafe afterward. We may need to communicate some documents with you from Blue Spider so please ensure these are returned as quickly as possible so we don’t hold up the session when we get there. If your teen is worried about not knowing anyone\, please reassure them that there are no cheesy “tell us your name and something fun about yourself” icebreakers – just a bunch of teens climbing and “hanging” out! One of the Family Support Team members will be there at all times to ensure the event goes smoothly.

SUMMARY:Bereaved Siblings Day
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year again where we would like to borrow the Bereaved Siblings (5+) for a day of all things magic! \nMagic school is nothing like actual school\, that’s for sure. At magic school\, we learn to make bubbling potions\, Troll snot\, and more disgusting things in Potion Making class. All of the masterclasses are tailored for the age group attending so there really is something for everyone to enjoy\, whatever age. \nOur siblings’ days help children find comfort in being with other bereaved siblings. Activities are supported by our therapists to ensure we give siblings the emotional support they need. \nPlease bring swimmers\, a towel\, a water bottle\, and a packed lunch/last night’s dinner in a Tupperware…(NO NUTS or KIWI PLEASE). We will serve Hot Snotlate to enjoy in the afternoon\, magic making is hard work after all! \nIf anyone at home has tested positive for Covid we ask that you test your child (of all ages) before they come. We try to encourage children to be independent and say goodbye in reception. Please let us know if you think your child might struggle and we can make sure a friendly face is there to greet them. Don’t worry about remembering your wand\, we have a masterclass upon arrival to make sure you are fully equipped to make all things magical on the day!

SUMMARY:Research Strategy Round Table
DESCRIPTION:Join us to develop our new research strategy!\nWho are we? \n\nDr AK Anderson\, Consultant in Paediatric Palliative Medicine and Dr Aneita Pringle\, Research Lead at Shooting Star Children’s Hospices (SSCH).\n\nWhat are we doing? \n\nOur aim is to become more research active as a hospice\, to answer important questions and support even better care.\nWe are offering a free workshop to help us understand what is important to you and develop priorities for research.\nWe are asking for your help as SSCH stakeholders to come together and discuss what is important for you and to develop our research priorities as an organisation.\nThe workshop will help us develop our 2024/2025 research strategy and beyond.\nWe are offering the option to attend one of two days.\n\nWhy is this important? \n\nYou may have heard the slogan\, “nothing about us without us\,” in relation to service design and/or research. Ethical research involves end users from the very beginning\, including the identification of research priorities.\nYour opinion matters to us.\nResources are precious in this sector. To ensure we maximise our limited time\, finances\, and energy\, we need to know what will make the biggest difference to children\, families\, and staff.\n\nWhat does taking part involve? \n\nThis full-day event will entail:\nPresentations on topics including what research is\, barriers to and facilitators of research\, and the current research landscape in paediatric palliative and hospice-based research.\nDiscussions in small groups relating to your thoughts\, and identifying what is important for you in this area.\n\nIs attending mandatory? \n\nNo\, attendance is voluntary. We’d love to have you come along\, but only if you want to!\n\nWho will be there? \n\nWe are inviting a wide array of individuals who are involved in the hospice in some way.\nSupported and bereaved parents;\nExternal staff (e.g.\, doctors and nurses);\nInternal staff from care (e.g.\, nurses\, carers\, physiotherapists\, doctors) and non-care (e.g.\, administrative staff\, Directors\, members of the fundraising and communications teams) are invited as well.\nA mixture of any or all the individuals above will attend.\n\nWhat will happen after the event? \n\nWe will:\nFeed back via a written report summarising what was discussed.\nConsult with children and young people on their priorities.\nIntegrate our findings with the wider research literature.\nFormulate our new research strategy based on these results and submit it to the Board for approval.\nShare or publish our results on our website\, in conferences\, and through academic journals.\n\nMiscellaneous: \n\nLunch will be provided.

DESCRIPTION:Indulge in a day of relaxation and rejuvenation\, where the focus is solely on taking time for yourself and your child. \nWear comfortable clothing as you will be invited to join a relaxation session\, designed to promote peace and calm. We will show you the techniques of story massage that you can do at home together as well. Then make some goodies to ensure the pampering can continue at home\, like bath bombs\, essential oil rollers and more. \nThis event offers a unique opportunity for you to recharge\, feel pampered\, and form supportive relationships with other Mum’s and their children. \nWe understand that schedules can change\, and it may be necessary to cancel\, so please let us know in advance to allow us to fill your place with another deserving Mum. Please book 2 tickets\, one for you and one for your child so we know who’s coming. If you have a sibling that will be in your care and wish to attend yourself and the child supported by us\, please reach out to us and we can discuss if this will be possible. \nWe can’t wait to see you both there! \nPlease note this is not for bereaved parents or siblings.

SUMMARY:Sailing Social for supported young people
DESCRIPTION:This event is for supported young people aged from 10 upwards. \nFrensham Sailability says: \n“Our sailors frequently comment that\, when sailing\, they are freed from their limitations and can compete on equal terms with any able-bodied sailor. We help you do this by providing a range of specially designed boats and the necessary support facilities. With the help of our experienced volunteers\, you can learn to sail\, or enjoy sailing again\, and develop your skills as far as you wish – to international competition level if you want!” \nNo previous experience of sailing is necessary but the use of hands is required. \nNew sailors can go out with an experienced ‘buddy’ who will explain what sailing involves. However\, our mission is to encourage independent sailing as much as possible. Frensham Pond provides a uniquely safe environment for this. \nThis is an opportunity for your children to experience sailing and the freedom of being in control of their boat. They will have the opportunity to go out on a 1-1 smaller boat with an experienced volunteer and also in a bigger group boat if their mobility allows.” \nAll safety equipment and wet weather gear are provided\, along with access to the clubhouse where parents and carers are welcome to stay for the duration or can spectate from dry land. \nPlease bring along a packed lunch (we will provide cake and snacks)\, a change of clothes\, and a towel (good old British weather may mean we sail in the rain). \nAs well as the experienced volunteers at Frensham\, the group will be supported by a nurse\, HCA\, family support worker\, and Shooting Star volunteers. This opportunity is suitable for young people aged 10 and over that would enjoy socialising with others. A nurse will be in contact to ask any questions if your child’s care plan isn’t up to date on our system and if their needs can be safely supported at the event.

SUMMARY:Thorpe Park family day out
DESCRIPTION:Due to the popular demand for theme park tickets\, we are delighted to say that Merlin Magic Wand has shared with us some tickets for Thorpe Park for families to enjoy. Please note that these tickets are only for those who have not yet had family tickets for any other of the theme parks this year. \nThe day is yours to spend how you wish! Tag up with other families to share your experience or make memories on your own\, it’s up to you. Children under 18 must be with an adult. Please read all the information very carefully when your tickets are issued. You will need a wheelchair pass that requires you to make arrangements before you arrive and height restrictions can apply to many rides so please check the attraction’s main site to make sure it is suitable before requesting tickets. If you arrive on the day without your wheelchair pass\, you will need to queue up and present your blue badge to get the passes that you need. \nTicket codes will be sent to you directly (via our family support team email\, the Eventbrite confirmation email is NOT your ticket) and are non-transferable to another date once you have booked the date of your choice. \nPlease reply with all the names of each family member known to SSCH who will be with you. \nIf you have already received tickets to another attraction from Merlin via us this year\, I’m afraid we must leave these tickets to other families. Please take photos and tag Merlin Magic Wand and us\, we both love to see your photos! \nWe hope you have an amazing day!

SUMMARY:Just Juniors sensory and social session for 7-11 year olds
DESCRIPTION:We’re going on a bear hunt. We’re going to catch a big one. Will you come too? For a quarter of a century\, readers have been swishy-swashying and splash-sploshing through this award-winning favourite. \nFollow and join in the family’s excitement as they wade through the grass\, splash through the river\, and squelch through the mud in search of a bear. What surprise awaits them in the cave on the other side of the dark forest? Let’s make a sensory book together to accompany this family favourite\, which you can take home with you to enjoy again and again. \nWe hope to have up to eight supported children attending. We will have 1 Nurse\, 1 Health Care Assistant and 1 Family Support Worker at Christopher’s. We do ask that if your child has complex care needs\, that you remain close by and enjoy a cup of tea in the Dining Room. SUMMARY:Siblings Day - Festival of You
DESCRIPTION:The Festival of You – a mini therapeutic festival for our Siblings\nIt’s that time of year again where we would like to borrow the siblings (5+ years) of the children cared for by Shooting Star Children’s Hospices. \nThe Festival of you is all about spending the day with other siblings learning how to master the art of tie dye\, finding a moment of calm and learning how to journal with our Art Therapist and\, then having a mini rave in the hydro pool… and that’s just a taster of what’s in store! Flares\, tie dye clothes\, silly hats and wacky outfits are very welcome if you fancy it! \nOur Siblings’ Days help children find comfort in being with other siblings. Activities are supported by our therapists to ensure we can give siblings the support they need. \nPlease bring swimmers\, a towel\, a water bottle and a packed lunch/last night’s dinner in a Tupperware.(NO NUTS PLEASE). Candy floss and other more sensible snacks will be provided to make sure they are rewarded for their hard work. \nIf anyone at home has tested positive for Covid we ask that you test your child (of all ages) before they come. We try to encourage children to be independent and say goodbye in reception. Please let us know if you think your child might struggle and we can make sure a friendly face is there to greet them.
