Whether you are new to challenges or a seasoned pro – Spartan races are great for a team\, so why not round up your friends and colleagues and take on this exciting challenge together. \n\nWhat’s more we’ve been announced as official charity partners of Spartan Race UK for both the Windsor Trifecta Weekend in October and the first ever Twickenham Stadion Race held at Twickenham Stadium in November. We have places available in the ‘Sprint’ – the 5km route. So once you have successfully registered through our registration form\, we’ll email you a unique code which you can use to register on the Spartan website. This code will give you free entry to the Windsor Trifecta Weekend (Sprint race only.) \n\nTo help you get Spartan ready you’ll receive a snazzy Shooting Star Children’s Hospices t-shirt (to get suitably muddy) and we’ll be there on the day to not only cheer you on and celebrate your achievement – but to give you a special Spartan Shooting Star Children’s Hospices friendlie tattoo! (We promise it won’t hurt…as they’re transferable ones). \n\nSo why not come together for this world renowned obstacle and endurance race in support of Shooting Star Children’s Hospices.

SUMMARY:Rotary Club of Twickenham Swimathon 2019
DESCRIPTION:The Swimathon is organised by The Rotary Club of Twickenham who provide the venue and deal with the organisation of the event. The purpose of the Rotary Swimathon is to raise money for local charities like Shooting Star Children’s Hospices\, and for other charities supported by Rotary International. \nTeam entries are free. Teams can be any size from one individual and up to six members. Charities\, schools or other organisations can enter as many teams as they wish. Each swimmer must get sponsorship for their team. The aim is for teams to swim as many lengths as possible in 55 minutes. You do not need to be an expert swimmer. Experienced swimmers or beginners who can swim a length unaided can take part\, as can children (with parental permission). You only need to be prepared to give up an hour of your time and get your friends to sponsor you and your team. \n70% of the sponsorship money raised by each team goes to the team’s nominated charity. The balance 0f 30% will go to charities identified by The Rotary Club of Twickenham (A list of charities supported each year is displayed on the club’s website). \nOnline sponsorship is preferred and we will set up an account on your behalf on the Wonderful.org website which your sponsors can access. Alternatively if you prefer to collect cash sponsorship we will provide an appropriate sponsorship form. \nThank you to everyone who joined the 2018 Rotary Swimathon. We look forward to seeing you\, with lots of new faces\, for the 2019 event. \nFor further information please contact: David Martin at Twickenham Rotary Club or visit the website

SUMMARY:Friendly Hands: Makaton and Music
DESCRIPTION:Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people to communicate. It is widely used in many educational and social environments and many of the children at Shooting Star Children’s Hospices benefit from it. \nAt Friendly Hands Makaton and Music Sessions you can learn key Makaton signs in a relaxed\, informal manner. Our team prepare a popular song and find specific words within the lyrics that are valuable for us to know how to sign. \nAt Friendly Hands you can learn the signs and enjoy practicing them within the song. This can help you to remember many new signs! \nAt the end of the session we video what we have learned and upload this to our website and social media\, so that children\, families and staff can sing and sign the song at other times. \n  \nWatch some of our previous performances: \n \nPlease be aware that all event dates are provisional and will be confirmed in the event invitation. \n

SUMMARY:Swim Serpentine 2019
DESCRIPTION:What is Swim Serpentine?\nSwim Serpentine the newest event created and organised by the people who run the London Marathon. Now in it’s second year it’s fast becoming London’s premier open water swimming event.  There are no currents to worry about as you’ll be swimming around the Serpentine lake in Hyde Park. Complete two laps of this open air course to conquer this challenge. \nWe have now filled all of our charity places for 2019 – if you are interested in take part in this event for us in 2020\, please email us at events@shootingstar.org.uk  \nApplications for this event close on the 23rd August – After this date we will not be able to offer you a charity place\, but if you have your own place through the ballot and would like to swim for us you are very welcome to. \nThe London Classics’ medal\nHave you already run the London Marathon\, and cycled the Ride London 100? Completing the Swim Serpentine will allow you to claim a London Classic’s Medal. Join the elite club of people who have run\, cycled and swum the capital’s most famous mass participation events.  The three events can be completed in any order\, and in any time period. Once you have your medal\, you’ll also be listed in the London Classics Hall of Fame (see the link at the end of this page). \nWhat makes this the event for me?\nSwimming is a low impact sport\, as it is non weight bearing. This is good news\, as you are less likely to pick up an injury compared to other sports. However\, you should not enter your first open water event without having swum outdoors previously. Start off gradually and build up the distance. \nThe two-mile swim will cover a challenging two full (1.6km) laps of the Serpentine. You should aim to swim at least twice a week or more and one of these swims should be outdoors where possible. \nTo train for an open water swim\, you need to consider two aspects of the event: \n\nBeing swim fit: the easiest way to become swim fit is to regularly use a swimming pool or lido\, where you can practise your technique and enhance your fitness.\nBeing acclimatised to swimming outdoors: you should be comfortable swimming in all conditions and be mindful that there will be other swimmers in close proximity to you.\n\nA two mile pool training plan from Swim Serpentine is available via the links below.

SUMMARY:Sensory Day at Holly Lodge
DESCRIPTION:Sensory Days are specifically for children and young people with profound and multiple learning difficulties between the ages of 5 and 21\, and their families. \nSensory days run in the school holidays and are a chance for the whole family to be involved in a fun session and have the opportunity to explore and experience appropriate sensory activities together. \nSensory Days are usually divided into two sessions: a morning session for children between 5 and 10 years and an afternoon session for children 11 years and older. \nEach session is a fun and interactive time using a mix of sensory and craft activities around a theme for the day such as ‘The Seaside’ or ‘Fun at the Fair’ with a break for refreshments. \nThe days gives families the opportunity to meet others in a similar situation and experience new skills using sensory activities that they can use at home.
