Eight year old Mahika, from Woking, has come up with a ‘novel’ way to raise money for her local children’s hospice Shooting Star Chase. The talented young writer, along with the help of her mum, Rashi, has created her very own e-book, Mahika’s Short Stories.
The collection of 10 moral based short stories is full of lots of different characters from lions to monkeys to princes to princesses, complete with eye catching illustrations.
Reading and writing stories have always been very close to Mahika’s heart, reading every day for school and listening to stories at bedtime, as well as enjoying tales her parents had heard from their parents.
Rashi explains “She’s always been very fond of writing since Year 1, she has a great imagination and started writing stories in the summer holidays.” Rashi suggested she try to do some short stories, given her wonderful imagination and the characters she creates. “She’s brilliant at recollecting things and putting them altogether.”
The family have always supported charities, both in India and England. During a visit to India last year, they donated some stationery, pens and pencils to an orphanage and it was apparent to mum Rashi how much it affected Mahika. “She has a very kind heart and understanding of the real world and feels very fortunate.”
Once she’d written her stories, Mahika asked what she could do with them, and from there the idea formulated to put them together to make her special e-book. They then both thought it would be lovely to give any proceeds raised to a local charity.
“It was important to us to support a local charity and those who were really in need and Shooting Star Chase seemed perfect to both of us. Children can relate to children better, Mahika understands how lucky she is and wants to help,” said Rashi.
Georgina Brookes, Community Fundraiser at Shooting Star Chase said, “It really is so kind and inspiring that Mahika has not only written such a wonderful collection of stories but that she’s also donating any proceeds to Shooting Star Chase. We’d like to thank her and her family so much. The children and families that Shooting Star Chase care for have to cope with the most difficult of circumstances and its supporters like Mahika which allow us to continue to help provide the much needed support. We’ll certainly be downloading some copies for the children at our Hampton and Guildford hospices to enjoy. ”
Mahika said of her book, “I am so happy to have written this book, and raising money for such a good cause is a great feeling. I can’t wait for my sisters to grow up and then I can read it to them too!”
A wonderful way to encourage and inspire children to engage in creative writing, Mahika’s book can be downloaded from Amazon with all the proceeds going toward helping make every moment count for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families.
