Virtual Shine – Winter 2024

In this virtual edition of Shine magazine we are proud to share the story of Freddie and his family as they have adapted to his condition with our support. We also take a look at a few of our fabulous fundraisers, and share how we are striving for clinical excellence.

Welcome from Margaret, Volunteer Receptionist

Our welcome for this edition of Shine comes from Margaret, one of our volunteer receptionist’s. Since 2005, she has welcomed families, greeted visitors and helped staff at Shooting Star House in Hampton.

“Nearly 30 years ago, there was an amazing fundraising campaign in my community and surrounding neighbourhoods for a children’s hospice to be built in Hampton. We then watched the first hole in the ground develop into a building where children with life-limiting conditions and their families would be supported. I have worked here as a receptionist since 2005, and I have seen significant changes to our care, with the aim of supporting more families. They are incredible people and I know that with Shooting Star by their side, they can look after their little ones and have a family life in the most difficult circumstances. It’s a privilege to be part of a team whose only wish is to give children, like Freddie, the very best life possible. Thank you to his parents for sharing their journey with us for this edition of Shine.”

Double award win

We are proud to share that Shooting Star has won not one, but two awards at the 2024 Care Awards by Business Awards UK. Our Family Support team won Best Family Liaison Team, while Shooting Star Children’s Hospices was honoured with the title of Best Palliative Care Provider.

Striving for clinical excellence

We pride ourselves in providing the very best clinical care to the families we support. This can only be achieved and maintained by ensuring we continue to review and adapt our services. Lisa, our Director of Care, highlights some of the improvements we have made to our services in the last year and how Shooting Star Children’s Hospices is making an impact on the local health system.

Freddie's story

Splashing about together in a pool was something Chris and Maeve never thought they would be able to do with their son Freddie, who had a tracheostomy at 10 months old.

Features

Bereavement Café offering support for schools

Our weekly Bereavement Café is providing pastoral support for children affected by the death of a classmate. Teachers identify those who were close to the child who has died and invite them into the café, where they can chat openly about their experience of grief. They can decorate stones in memory of their friend and place them in the fountain in Shooting Star House garden. A school teacher shared, “Shooting Star does a lot of mindfulness and well-being activities in which the students can have some time to reflect and take their mind off things. There are trained people there that can talk with them.”

A day in the life of a Family Support Worker

Vikki’s role as a Family Support Worker includes a new partnership with the NICU unit at St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey, ensuring staff and families are aware of the support Shooting Star can offer. “Being a Family Support Worker is incredibly meaningful to me. Being able to support the family through memory making, I can give them something physical to remember them by. By being able to listen, guide and support them, I go away every day knowing that I’ve made a small difference in their lives.”

Welcoming more families to our Memory Days

Our annual Memory Days are poignant events for parents and carers who are supported by our bereavement service to treasure the life of their child. Families can meet with members of the care team who cared for their child and those providing care in their bereavement. Held at our purpose-built children’s hospice, Christopher’s, and Shooting Star House in Hampton, over 117 people were welcomed through our doors this year. For the first time, families whose child died suddenly were able to attend, following the expansion of our bereavement service late last year.

Well done to Claire who has smashed her fundraising target of £10,000 by taking on the half ironman triathlon in Mallorca. There was no time to enjoy the stunning Balearic backdrop however as she had to take on a demanding swim, cycle and run in the Mediterranean heat!
