The first week of June marks Volunteers’ Week where the amazing individuals who give their time, expertise and skills for organisations across the country are celebrated for the wonderful work they do.
Shooting Star Children’s Hospices have over 700 volunteers who all play a vital role in the running of the charity, ensuring we can continue to provide the vital care and support that is so desperately needed by families across Surrey and London.
Our volunteers help us throughout every area of the charity, 170 volunteers cover a breadth of roles across our two hospices, with 80 involved in supporting our dedicated care team in care roles. 110 dedicated events volunteers form the core of our events support, most recently at our Richmond Sunrise Walk – often being the first to arrive and last to leave – from marshalling to being part of our enthusiastic cheer squads. With 13 lovely charity shops across Surrey and London, our 310 volunteers ensure the doors are open so people can shop ’til they drop whilst supporting their local children’s hospice charity; while 114 volunteers are part of our dedicated Friends’ Groups who fundraise throughout the year to help raise as much as they can; and 53 volunteers offer their time in our support office, giving their expertise in myriad ways to the fundraising and communication teams.
On Tuesday and Wednesday of the week volunteers were invited to our Guildford hospice, Christopher’s and our Hampton hospice, Shooting Star House for celebration tea and treats. The events are an opportunity to catch up with one another and hear all the latest from the charity.
Melanie Hill, Head of Volunteer Development said, “Our volunteers are vital to the success of the charity and make a real difference to the children and families we support. Without their help we would not be able to continue providing nursing, practical, emotional and medical care to the 700 families we support across Surrey and London. It’s so important to recognise the amazing contribution each and every one of our volunteers give to Shooting Star Children’s Hospices – they are truly inspirational and we can’t thank them enough for all they do!”
We’re always looking for new people to join our team too, just a few hours will make a huge difference.
