A sound Music Drop-In session

March 18, 2023

On Saturday 25 February families gathered at Shooting Star House for a special music themed drop-in! Families arrived to tea and coffee, cake and crafting. The day was packed with various activities, giving each child the opportunity to explore the different facilities available to them.

They were excited to welcome Marion Barton, Lead Therapist, who ran an interactive music session with all the children and their families.  Everyone had a chance to play instruments, sing or dance along. They took turns at conducting the music and played with the rainbow scarves which stimulated the senses.

Music is a powerful force that helps people to communicate without the need for words and the families enjoyed being together exploring this world. They finished the music session with the beautiful song – ‘What a Wonderful World’ – expressing the joys old and young can feel from the world around us.

Marion Barton said, “I felt privileged to join families at our drop-in. The power of music was really on display. My favourite moment was when two of our supported children teamed up to conduct the entire group in music making. It was great to see them taking charge!”

Continuing the theme of music, families then had the opportunity to make their own musical instruments; families could choose from cardboard box guitars, plastic cup shakers and paper straw pan-pipes prepared by our lovely Family Support Workers. From then on, the music didn’t stop. Children and grown-ups loved using the touch screen on our Lifelites Tilt Table to make fun and silly musical sounds too – it was a great hit!

Rachel Chambers, one of our Family Support Workers, said, “The drop-in session was lively and busy as we joined together to create some great music. This involved making music on technology, designing eco-friendly instruments and joining together in a special music session for all ages. My favourite part of the day was seeing the children’s faces light up when making sound and speaking to families about how this was the best start to their weekend!”

These sessions are there to support families in the best way possible, we can only provide them thanks to the generosity of our supporters, please consider donating today.
