Shooting Star hosts ‘Light up a Star’ service in memory of loved ones
Hampton’s All Saints Church was filled with warmth and reflection last week as families, friends and supporters gathered for the second-ever Light up a Star service, a poignant event organised by Shooting Star Children’s Hospices. The service honoured the memory of loved ones who have died, offering comfort and a space for remembrance.
The evening began with Karen Sugarman, our Executive Vice-President, welcoming attendees to the service, followed by the ceremonial lighting of lanterns – a deeply moving moment for those in attendance. Reverend Donna Williams shared some comforting words as she shared her own personal experience with loss and how important it is to find light in times of darkness.
We also heard from our Chief Executive, Paul Farthing, who thanked everyone for coming and spoke about the incredible work Shooting Star do.
Throughout the night, we were fortunate enough to have some musical performances from the Wilful Choir, our very own music therapists and care team, as well as an extra special performance from Iris and Caspar, whose sister and daughter, Rubi, was supported by us. After the service, there was an opportunity for everyone to come together for some refreshments and some baked treats, which were kindly provided by our volunteers and staff.
Megan Matthews, Supporter Care Co-ordinator at Shooting Star, who supported in organising the event, shared her reflections of the evening; “I feel honoured to have been a part of this year’s Light up a Star event, which has been an incredibly moving and meaningful experience. It was truly special to see families come together to remember the lives of their children and to witness how much it meant to them to have a space where they could connect. Creating a space filled with love, support and reflection was a privilege, and it’s moments like these that remind us of the importance of what we do.”
Giv McMullan, Supporter Engagement Administrator at Shooting Star, who helped organise the event alongside Megan, added; “It was truly a privilege to attend and help organise this year’s Light up a Star service. I feel completely inspired and in awe of the strength, resilience and togetherness of everyone who attended the church as well as those who joined through the livestream. Thank you to everyone who made the event possible, we are extremely grateful.”
The service also provided a donation opportunity for attendees to support our ongoing work, which provides essential care and support to children and families facing the unimaginable.
For those unable to attend in person, the event was livestreamed and is available to view here.
