Community comes together to raise more than £5,000 for hospice hydrotherapy pool
More than 120 swimmers of all ages took to the water at Guildford Lido to help raise vital funds for Shooting Star Children’s Hospice’s hydrotherapy pool appeal.
The Swim 100 Challenge, organised by long-time Shooting Star supporter Gayle Vickers, took place on Sunday 29 June and raised over £5,000 towards the hospice’s hydrotherapy pool crowdfunder.
Gayle was inspired to organise the event after learning about the campaign to support the hospice’s hydrotherapy pool. Having successfully hosted a festive fun run at Christmas, she decided to create a summer challenge that would bring the community together while raising funds for Shooting Star.
Held at Guildford Lido, the event saw more than 120 swimmers, from as young as seven years old, take part. Five swimming lanes were made available for the challenge thanks to the generous support of sponsors James Croft Images, Brett Davison Physio Boutique, Mr Simon Thompson, Orthopaedic Surgeon, and Mark Robson of Travel Beyond.
The atmosphere throughout the morning was one of encouragement, determination and community spirit, with swimmers of all ages and abilities supporting one another every step, and lap, of the way.
Gayle said: “A huge thank you to everyone who swam, volunteered, sponsored, donated, cheered and helped make Swim 100 such a fantastic morning at Guildford Lido.
“Together, with over 120 swimmers, we’ve already raised more than £5,000 for Shooting Star Children’s Hospice. The atmosphere was incredible, with swimmers of all ages and abilities supporting one another throughout the challenge. Thank you for being part of such a special community. I couldn’t do it without you, and I can’t wait for the next challenge.”
The money raised will support Shooting Star and its restoration of the hydrotherapy pool at Shooting Star House, helping children with life-limiting conditions and their families access specialist care, therapy and support.
