Michael Ball OBE brings a little Wonka magic to Shooting Star
Families, volunteers and staff at Shooting Star Children’s Hospices enjoyed a truly magical visit from Vice-President Michael Ball OBE, on Thursday 15 October, who spent the afternoon meeting families and children at Shooting Star House.
The visit began with a surprise appearance at the charity’s ‘Knit and Natter’ group, who as part of Knit Before Christmas, are creating festive novelties to be sold as stocking fillers and tree decorations at fairs across the season, in aid of Shooting Star. The wool-derful comun’knit’ty were left astonished when Michael walked into the room; taking the time to sit down, chat and even join in with the knitting!

The afternoon continued with Michael spending quality time with children and their families supported by Shooting Star.
In celebration of Michael’s upcoming West End musical, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, families could create their own golden ticket chocolate bar wrapper, pipe cleaner lollipops and even enjoy some candy floss and sweet treats!
Michael and families were also treated to a Makaton performance of The Candy Man, led by the charity’s music therapist and a volunteer pianist, which brought smiles to faces throughout the room.

During the visit, Michael spoke to the families and shared, “Thank you for making the effort to come out and see me, it means the world, and makes me realise why you want to be involved in a place like Shooting Star and ensure it keeps on going and get the support that it needs.
“This place is really important for families to know they’re not alone – it’s a lifeline, with such amazing staff and kind people.”

Karen Sugarman MBE, Executive Vice-President of Shooting Star Children’s Hospices, said: “Visits from our Vice-Presidents, Patrons and celebrity supporters are incredibly important. They bring joy, create lifelong memories and help raise awareness of the vital work we do to support families. Michael’s genuine warmth and kindness were evident throughout the day, and it was wonderful to see the happiness he brought to everyone he met.”
