Care Trustee

The Board of Trustees provides support and guidance to the organisation, helping determine strategic direction and ensuring that its work is carried out to the highest standard.

Location:
Hybrid: Board meetings in person at Christopher's, Guildford or Shooting Star House, Hampton on Monday evenings, other meetings are mainly online. with an Away Day off-site in person.
Time:
Four evening Board and Four Committee meetings per year and an away day. Four Board meetings are normally held in person in Guildford or Hampton on Monday evenings, with one short online only meeting in addition; Committee meetings are usually held virtually, on Zoom, and normally last under two hours.

Duties and key responsibilities

  • Understand Shooting Star Children’s Hospices’ aims and objectives as set out in its governing document and ensure that it operates in accordance with them.
  • Take reasonable steps to ensure the charity operates within the law and relevant regulatory frameworks, including Charity Commission, Companies House and Care Quality Commission requirements.
  • Contribute to the development and oversight of organisational strategy and business plans.
  • Monitor organisational performance, quality metrics and strategic risks.
  • Support and constructively challenge the Chief Executive and Executive Team.
  • Represent the Board’s agreed position when speaking publicly on behalf of the organisation.
  • Contribute towards regular reviews of Board effectiveness and governance arrangements.
  • Act as an ambassador for Shooting Star Children’s Hospices and support relationship-building with key stakeholders and partners.

In addition, the Care Trustee will:

  • Provide strategic oversight and constructive challenge in relation to care quality, clinical governance, safeguarding and patient safety.
  • Support the Board in ensuring services remain safe, effective, responsive and well-led.
  • Contribute to discussions regarding hospice care delivery, service development, workforce planning and regulatory compliance.
  • Champion the voice and experience of children, young people and families in Board discussions and decision-making.
  • Support the organisation in maintaining high standards of clinical practice, governance and continuous improvement
  • The successful candidate will attend, and contribute to, both of the charity’s care-specific committees and will also be invited to chair the Quality, Governance and Risk Committee.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Significant senior leadership experience within nursing, healthcare, hospice care, children’s services, safeguarding, clinical governance or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of quality, safety and governance frameworks within health or care settings
  • Ability to think strategically, analyse complex information and contribute effectively at Board level.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the confidence to provide both support and constructive challenge.
  • A collaborative and values-led approach to leadership.
  • Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • A strong personal alignment with the mission and values of Shooting Star Children’s Hospices.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience of Care Quality Commission frameworks and regulation.
  • Experience of partnership working across health and social care systems.
