Retail Committee members
Shooting Star Children’s Hospices is seeking individuals with retail expertise to advise on the development of its shops and e-commerce operations by joining our retail committee.
The Retail Committee provides support and guidance to our charity’s Chief Executive and the retail operation, helping it to determine strategy, improve operational performance and ensure that its work is carried out to the highest standard. Candidates will bring significant current or recent retail experience, preferably with some direct experience of frontline in-store or online trading.

Role specification
- Understand the purpose and role of the Committee in supporting the charity’s retail operation.
- Review and agree the annual business plan and budget for the retail function.
- Monitor and review progress against the objectives and targets set out in the business plan.
- Ensure that the charity properly assesses the risks inherent with the delivery of the retail operations, and that these risks are being appropriately mitigated by the policies and activities.
- Offer advice and support on meeting the objectives and handling issues that arise. This may be both during meetings and between them.
- Make occasional visits to some of the shops and the distribution unit.
Person specification
- Significant current or recent retail experience, preferably with some direct experience of frontline in-store or online trading.
- Applicants don’t need prior experience in the charity retail sector, but should have a broad appreciation of the issues facing it.
- Share our charity's deep-seated commitment to improving the lives of children and their families.
Terms of appointment
- This role is unremunerated, but reasonable, pre-agreed travel expenses will be reimbursed.
- The time commitment includes quarterly Committee meetings, which are normally held virtually, during the working day and last under 90 minutes.
- Appointments will be offered subject to standard checks including satisfactory references and a DBS check.
