Celebrating our volunteers
On Sunday 16 November, we were delighted to welcome 60 of our dedicated volunteers (as well as a few of their friends considering joining our team) to our annual Volunteer Thank You event at the Cobham Curve.

Guests enjoyed the opportunity to mingle and catch up with one another over some cakes and refreshments, before hearing some inspiring updates from across the charity.
Our Chief Executive, Paul Farthing shared the latest charity news, with Fiona Rankine, our Lead for Counselling and Family Support, speaking about our Specialist Bereavement Service.

Retail and Volunteer Manager, Zeala Day and Retail Manager, Joe Tooze discussed the challenges facing retail and the vital part our volunteers play across our shops. Also joining the afternoon was Katherine Theobald, one of our Trustees, who highlighted the vital role they play within the charity.
The event also welcomed Fleur, bereaved mum to Toby. Fleur movingly shared her family’s experience of being supported by Shooting Star, allowing our volunteers to hear first hand how their support allows us to be there for families.

The afternoon concluded with the launch of our Long Service badges and certificates, recognising the incredible commitment from our volunteers. Alongside celebrations for five, ten, 15 and 20 years of service, we had over ten attendees who were eligible for 25 year badges – which is an amazing testament to their dedication and support. This initiative will roll out to all our volunteers in the coming months as we work to ensure everyone receives the recognition they deserve.
One volunteer shared, “Shooting Star organised the best Volunteers day I have attended. Great presentations gave a good flavour of the many roles volunteers carry out. The charity’s gratitude for our hard work shone through.”

Melanie Hill, Head of Volunteer Development and Retail said, “Each and every one of our volunteers play such a vital role in ensuring we can continue to be there for families. We simply couldn’t do what we do without them, so events like this are just a small way for us to thank and celebrate them. It was lovely to see so many of the team together and thank you again to everyone of them who continue to make a difference every day.”
