Shooting Star hosts first Summer Research Celebration

July 24, 2025

Shooting Star Children’s Hospices hosted its inaugural Summer Research Celebration on 9 July, bringing together families, hospice staff and researchers to highlight ground-breaking work in paediatric palliative care.

Held at Christopher’s, the event showcased the power of evidence-based practice in transforming care for children with life-limiting conditions. Co-led by Research Fellow, Dr Jolanta Golan and Research Assistant, Kim Burke, the afternoon offered a powerful look into current research efforts, both within the hospice and across national and international partnerships.

There was a selection of incredible speakers, including Dr Anna-Karenia Anderson, Clinical Consultant in Paediatric Palliative Care and Medical Director at Shooting Star, who delivered an insightful keynote speech on her research career. Her talk highlighted the challenges and importance of building a better evidence base for children’s care.

Tracie Lewin-Taylor, Nurse Consultant in Paediatric Palliative Care, presented findings from her MSc literature review on palliative care in neonatal and paediatric intensive care units.

The event also featured a discussion to gather views from staff and families on making research in a hospice setting more meaningful and accessible. It focused on what makes research feel respectful, how best to approach families, and how to ensure results are shared in a way that matters to those involved.

Attendees were invited to join a new Parent and Public Involvement (PPI) group launching later this year, aimed at shaping future studies and improving ethical, inclusive practice.

Dr Jolanta Golan commented on the success of the event: “This event was a celebration not just of research, but of collaboration, compassion, and curiosity, We’re proud to be building a research culture that puts children and families at the heart of everything we do.”
