As the Ryder Cup takes place this weekend, it was just last Friday when the iconic prize trophy was spending a lovely afternoon at West Byfleet Golf Club, as part of a special charity day in aid of Shooting Star Children’s Hospices.

Wonderful West Byfleet Golf Captain Terry O’Connor and Lady Captain, Susi Mackay Thrower have chosen to support us as their local children’s hospice charity with many challenges and events throughout the year, with the latest event a special Celebrity Golf Day complete with a visit from the actual Ryder Cup!

A huge treat to golfing enthusiasts, the cup was on loan to the club for the day, with donations coming to us from those wishing to have a photograph with it.

After the obligatory bacon rolls and a cuppa, the 22 teams’ tee-ed off, starting at different holes to ensure everyone could begin at the same time.

The September sun shone down on the teams, who were made up of West Byfleet golf club members and well-known faces in the sporting world, as well as much loved comedy legend Jimmy Tarbuck and actor Steven Pinder.

After four or so hours on the course it was certainly time to head to the 19th hole, where the guests enjoyed a special dinner and auction in aid of us. The guests, joined by our Executive Vice-President Karen Sugarman MBE, were treated to a special surprise performance by Jimmy Tarbuck – who received a standing ovation.

This event follows amazing challenges taken on by both Terry and Suzie including a skydive and triathlon!

Jane De Lay, Head of Community Engagement said, “We can’t thank Terry, Suzi and everyone else involved enough in making their Celebrity Golf Day such a special event. It was clear how much everyone enjoyed themselves and we’re so honoured that the celebrities and club members took the time to come together to support us. The ongoing support by super people like Terry and Suzi means we’re able to continue to be there for families who need us most. On behalf of everyone at Shooting Star Children’s Hospices a huge thank you!”

There are lots of ways you can fundraise for us – from golf days to bake sales – find out how you can help make every moment count, like Terry and Susi, here
