Events volunteer
To support Shooting Star Children’s Hospices at a series of autumn fundraising events by helping to create a warm, welcoming and encouraging experience for participants, supporters and members of the public. Volunteers may help with meet and greet, cheering, route marshal duties, and start or finish line support depending on the event.
This is an ad-hoc event volunteering role supporting one or more events:
- Ealing Half Marathon: Sunday 27 September 2026, 7:00–13:30, Walpole Park, Ealing.
- Light the Night: Saturday 3 October 2026, 17:00–22:30, Central London.
- Royal Parks Half Marathon: Sunday 11 October 2026, 08:00–13:00, St James’s Park / Hyde Park

This is an ad-hoc event volunteering role supporting one or more events
Duties & Key Responsibilities
- Welcome participants, supporters and visitors in a friendly and professional way.
- Act as a positive ambassador for Shooting Star Children’s Hospices throughout the event.
- Cheer on runners or walkers and help create an encouraging, uplifting atmosphere.
- Provide meet and greet support, including helping people find the right place or directing them to event staff where needed.
- Support the start or finish line area by helping participants feel welcomed, supported and celebrated.
- For Light the Night, act as a route marshal in pairs, supporting participants along the route and following event guidance.
- Follow instructions from the event lead and raise any concerns promptly to a member of staff.
- Help ensure the event feels safe, organised and enjoyable for everyone involved.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Friendly, approachable and confident speaking to members of the public.
- Reliable and punctual, with a willingness to follow event instructions and safety guidance.
- Enthusiastic and positive, with the ability to encourage and motivate participants.
- Comfortable being outdoors and standing for periods of time during the event.
- Able to work well as part of a team and represent the charity in a professional manner.
- No previous event experience is required, as guidance and support will be provided.
