London Marathon 2023: Spectacular s-miles and smashing records
On Sunday, we saw 59 brave runners, including the popular Chewbacca, take on the ultimate challenge of the London Marathon in aid of Shooting Star Children’s Hospices. After months, and for some years, of incredibly intense dedication, training and waiting, it was finally the big day.
Although it was a drizzly day, this did not dampen the spirits of our runners and supporters. The buzz all over London and across the Shooting Star Children’s Hospices cheer points made for an electric atmosphere, which without doubt spurred on everyone taking part. A huge thank you to all of our staff, volunteers and supporters who joined on the day, and made a huge contribution to the overwhelming support that the runners shared got them through their darkest hours, as well as their most joyful moments.
Arthur Simmons who ran as ‘Wreck it Ralph’ in memory of his son Ted, said the following special words, ‘”Every year, I’m blown away by the people at Shooting Star Children’s Hospices and I have benefitted from the services for the last nine years, it was a pleasure to be able to run for them. Amazing day, amazing people and an absolute honour to be running in the capital together.“
They all began the run at various times, each successfully finishing the marathon, with sweat, tears and cheers all around. On top of such a massive achievement and receiving well earnt medals, the runners raised a mind blowing figure of £158,000! This outstanding number will continue to grow as the runners celebrate and spread word about their accomplishment.
There a few other reasons to be celebrating including the fact that this London Marathon 2023 was also a record smashing one. With plenty of world records being broken for fastest runners in certain costumes, from inflatable dinosaurs to a person with the most amount of trousers on. Obviously our favourite costume was Chewbacca!
