Scouts ‘fire’ up a storm at day camp
Shooting Star Scouts held a fun-filled day camp at Christopher’s, in Guildford, at the beginning of September, packed with hands-on activities, tasty treats and important fire safety lessons.
Scouts got stuck in with a sensory-based activity where Scouts made ice cream and fudge in sandwich bags. Through the experience, they learned how different temperatures can transform ingredients from one state to another.
Our fantastic kitchen team provided pizza dough, giving the Scouts the chance to create their own pizzas for lunch. They also experimented with homemade ice cream, adding sweet treats such as Crunchie bars and chocolate digestives. To round off a day of culinary creativity, Rice Krispie cakes and rocky road were provided for teatime.

During the camp, Scouts worked towards their Fire Safety badge by learning about potential fire hazards around the hospice and taking part in a mock fire drill. While restrictions on open flames meant a traditional campfire was not possible, the Scouts showed plenty of imagination by creating their own pretend campfires for a campfire singalong.

Ginny Hancock, Shooting Star’s physiotherapist, comments: “It’s amazing that we’re able to run a Scouts group here at Christopher’s. It means we’re able to involve children and young people in Scouting that wouldn’t necessarily be able to access it in their own community. Across the year, we’ve worked on badges, for example, Gardeners badge, where we planted courgettes and tomatoes in the garden and watched them grow. We also completed our Animal Carer badge by going along to Pets at Home and seeing/holding animals like rats and gerbils! Most recently we worked on our Fire Safety badge at the day camp, and they created their own fake campfires!”
At the end of the day, each Scout was presented with a Fire Safety certificate before everyone came together for one final campfire singalong.
To keep our Scouts achieving their new badges, we need your help. Please consider donating today to secure our Scouts more day camps!
