Super supporter achieves ‘summit’ amazing taking on Mount Kilimanjaro in support of Shooting Star Children’s Hospices

February 17, 2025

Ben Luker, motivated by his personal connection, has reached new heights at the start of the year. Ben embarked on an incredible fundraising journey, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to support Shooting Star Children’s Hospices, who have proved to be a lifeline for his family.

His sister, Laura, was diagnosed with severe epilepsy that causes profound learning difficulties at just two years old. Requiring 24/7 care for the rest of her life, the family was introduced to Shooting Star when she was four years old and has been receiving care ever since.

We have played a pivotal role in Laura’s life, providing specialist care while also offering a wide range of activities, from our sensory room to hydrotherapy, allowing her to immerse herself in various activities safely. This support has not just been for Laura, but for her family, especially for his mum, who has relied on the support as Laura’s care needs evolved.

“Shooting Star offer far more than just respite care,” said Ben. “They provide compassion. They were invaluable when helping with Laura’s recent transition from Shooting Star into adulthood by finding resources to help her. They helped with planning, completing various forms, and connecting us with the right resources. They are like family to us.”

Across seven days in January, Ben climbed the highest mountain in Africa, and scaled an unthinkable 5,895m to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. This challenge has helped him raise nearly £6,000 for Shooting Star. He describes the experience as both physically demanding and deeply fulfilling. “It was a huge challenge, but knowing I was raising money for a cause so close to my heart made it worth every step.”

Ben hopes his story will inspire others to fundraise for Shooting Star Children’s Hospices. “The staff there don’t just care for the children, they care for the whole family too. They really go above and beyond, and I’m incredibly grateful for everything they’ve done for us.”

For anyone considering fundraising for Shooting Star, Ben’s advice is simple: “Do it! I’ve been so lucky to meet some amazing people during this experience, it has been completely life changing. Knowing that you’re making a difference for families like mine makes any challenge like this worthwhile.”
