Thank You event for our vital volunteers

March 14, 2023

On Sunday 12 March, we finally were able to hold our long overdue Volunteer Thank You event, postponed from 2020 due to the pandemic. So, the wonderful event took place at the beautiful Cobham Curve.

The event took place at Cobham Curve, with over 50 volunteers attending the event, along with other Shooting Star Children’s Hospices staff including Directors and our Chief Executive. The afternoon began with an informative version of ‘heads and tails’ based on facts about the charity, followed by a brief summary of our new strategy from Chief Executive, Paul Farthing with an opportunity for volunteers to ask questions. Lisa Dennis, our Director of Care also spoke as well as an activity from one of our Family Support Workers, Paige Bale, where volunteers created nine canvasses. These canvasses created from the activity will be put together and be exhibited at Shooting Star House, Hampton.

The volunteers then enjoyed mingling with other volunteers over coffee, tea, or a glass of prosecco and plenty of sweet treats to enjoy. There was also the opportunity to join in with a game of ‘networking bingo’ to help the volunteers interact and get to know one another, with the added encouragement of a lucky draw to win a bottle of prosecco.

Our Chair of Trustees, Andrew Coppel, thanked the volunteers and spoke about the work of the Trustees, and five volunteers also took to the microphone to share their stories of what motivated them to volunteer and what their role entails. The afternoon finished with a moving speech by a bereaved mum, Breege, who talked about how the charity has helped her family and supported her publishing a book for children about dealing with grief, the proceeds of which are being donated to the hospice.

If your interest has been sparked and you would like to volunteer your time to support your local children’s hospice charity, then apply today to volunteer.
