Kitchen and Facilities Support volunteer
The Kitchen and Facilities Support Volunteer is a flexible, hybrid role that supports both the Kitchen and Housekeeping teams, moving between areas as operational needs require. The role plays an important part in helping to create a clean, safe, welcoming, and comfortable environment for children, families, visitors, staff, and fellow volunteers at Shooting Star Children’s Hospices. This non-clinical role requires enthusiasm, flexibility, reliability, and a positive attitude whilst always maintaining appropriate boundaries and confidentiality.

Christopher's (Shooting Star Children's Hospices), Old Portsmouth Rd, Guildford GU3 1LP
Time:
4 hours a week/Fridays or Mondays with reasonable flexibility to cover other days as required
Duties & Key Responsibilities: Kitchen Support
- Assist with basic food preparation, including sandwiches, paninis, and salads.
- Maintain high standards of kitchen cleanliness and food hygiene
- Wash up and clean away after food preparation and main meals.
- Keep the kitchenette area clean and tidy.
- Replenish refreshments such as tea, coffee, and squash.
- Support cooks with additional tasks as required.
- Follow food hygiene procedures and kitchen task lists.
Duties & Key Responsibilities: Housekeeping
- Help maintain a clean, tidy, and welcoming hospice environment.
- Clean communal areas, corridors, bathrooms, toilets, and dining areas as directed.
- Work alongside the Care Team to promote a healthy environment.
- Report maintenance issues, faults, or disrepair to the appropriate team.
- Assist in maintaining housekeeping standards throughout the hospice.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Basic knowledge of kitchens and food preparation.
- Initiative, reliability, and common sense.
- Friendly and approachable manner.
- Understanding of the importance of confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Standard DBS check – all Volunteer roles at our hospices require us to carry out a DBS check at the appropriate level – this is a simple online procedure

Hybrid: Board meetings in person at Christopher's, Guildford or Shooting Star House, Hampton on Monday evenings, other meetings are mainly online. with an Away Day off-site in person.
Time:
Four evening Board and Four Committee meetings per year and an away day. Four Board meetings are normally held in person in Guildford or Hampton on Monday evenings, with one short online only meeting in addition; Committee meetings are usually held virtually, on Zoom, and normally last under two hours.
